Newbie hens ....and then there were four.

Sad news.
Yesterday, one of the five newbie hens became part of the food chain. Apparently, a hawk was checking out the hedgerow, and those goofy chickens were scratching around in there.

I have told them that was NOT a good idea. They just don't listen.

Well, four were fast, but the fifth was not.
We found the remains of a perfectly cleaned carcass in the evening as we were trying to get the girls back into their coop. Turns out the four fast ones had taken refuge in the burn pile. Thankfully.

(For you City Folk, the burn pile is where we dump branches and plant debris that gets set aflame once it gets BIG enough. This one is getting close....)

Today, the remaining newbies spent their day INSIDE the Condo.

The hawk, with great expectations, returned to the site of his last chicken nugget meal and hung around in the sugar maple all morning. No luck for him today.

Rose and Lily, the elders, don't go playing around in the hedgerow and are doing fine.
Just thought you'd like to know.....

On the bright side....
Tonight we will be enjoying the first fresh corn of the season. The corn you can buy at the grocery is good, but, baby, this corn is Fresh Picked, and ..... man, oh man, it will be Really Good. Along with some cherry tomatoes just picked, pasta with fresh pesto, and grilled hot sausage, dinner tonight will be Fine!

Life is Good out here at Mellow Meadows!
